It’s a work of fiction, based off of a cult British TV series created by The Third Day‘s Dennis Kelly back in 2013 (he’s an executive producer on the American version as well), and an on/off again labor of love for novelist-turned-screenwriter-turned-showrunner Gillian Flynn, for almost as long. Utopia, Amazon’s eight-episode sci-fi thriller that hits the streaming service today, imagines a fanciful world in which superfans discover a lost postscript to a popular comic that may or may not be the key to stopping Armageddon. ![]() As for the one medical professional who thinks he knows what’s actually going on? He holds a church service for those who care to join on Sunday and tells Nikki he’s open to hearing her beliefs if she’s open to hearing his. And while Jonathan’s big talk of gospel and conversions seemed destined for a blowup coming in, he seems to have adapted his beliefs to the needs of the community quicker than most. The only fundamental that receives much focus is religion, specifically, Pastor Jonathan’s Christianity, and a few other pioneers’ aversion to it. That orange substance they’re all drinking? Eventually revealed to be Red’s personal Tang supply, but only if you were listening very carefully. The food they’re eating? I guess it came from somewhere. That trench they’re digging? I guess it’s for something. For a show about building a new society, a lot of the details being worked out in Utopia don’t receive much focus. ![]()
